If you are just starting out, donÔÇÖt worry about this, pick a box like the Fast Track Pro or Ultra, or the Presonus firemobile and get your feet wet.Yes, your thinking is correct. Oops, now IÔÇÖm talking about the quality of the Analog to digital converters (A/D or A to D) which people will be just as picky about as pre-amps. I just bring this up so that you donÔÇÖt buy a device that only has Line-inÔÇÖs and then wonder why your microphone has no signal level, because it has to be amplified before itÔÇÖs digitized. ThereÔÇÖs quite a bit of difference in pre-amp quality and ÔÇ£coloringÔÇØ but thatÔÇÖs a whole topic on itÔÇÖs own. Line-in? Microphones require a pre-amp which is usually build in to most all of the external boxes like the m-audio fast track. But again, you need to identify your needs first (how many instruments and how many microphones do you want to be able to record at once). You might have seen my threads about the Line6 POD X3, it is an amazing all in one box for about$200 used at used GC or ebay. your real-time voice which is extremely hard for your brain to deal with in these cases you want ASIO because it will not have these latency delays. WaveRT is great but if you want to do something like: record a vocal track and then play it back while trying to record an over-dub you will find there is probably going to be a small delay in the playback vs. Keep in mind, almost all external audio devices will come with an ASIO driver and most will operate with only using the WaveRT. Jhaki wrote:Thanks again Mark,-I am using a laptop so i'd have to opt for an external card,-I scanned through about 19 pages of your threads with sound card discussions dominating a large part of them an your input is of great value, will now get down to sifting through reviews and feedback and see where it leads. if you choose a firewire card, check what chipset you have and search to see if it's compatible. If you are using a desktop, there are several PCI input cards like the m-audio delta 1010 but you usually need microphone pre-amps in addition to these types of cards.Īlso be awre that not all firewire chipsets are compatible with audio input devices. My main input is a first generation Mackie Onyx 1220 mixer with firewire, I got it for about $250 with the firewire card installed and I love it. I have a mackie satelitte which I like but I had to replace the capacitors in it which would suck if yours failed and your not a DIY electronics type. I also had a mackie blackjack but returned it due to poor drivers. I also like my Motu Ultralight (about $2-300) and I've used the presonus firemobile pre which was great. I like both of them although many people have had issues with the PRO not having enough gain I was still very pleased and it can be had for about $100 used. I've used M-audio Fast Track Pro and Fast Track Ultra. If you search my profile for posts by me, you will find discussions on sound cards with specific models and some reviews. Have any of you folks got experience using these sound cards? Are these appropriate for my needs and will they alleviate the burden on my CPU and will they give me better recording as well as headphone and speaker sound quality? Can any of you recommend other brands of sound cards for someone on a tight budget that will suit my needs? Please bear in mind that I am only using software( and an Akai mini pro midi which is usb connected) and that I only intend on connecting headphones or speakers to the sound card and not any hardware. I am technically pretty ignorant but understand that a external sound card will be the solution and I have been eyeing up the Numark DJ IO,the Numark Stereo IO and the Behringer U-control UCA 202. I have a question concerning external sound cards,-my problem is that my pc has a shoddy sound card(virtually no sub bass and constant warnings popping up!) and that mixcraft and beatcraft as well as the VST's that i use tax my CPU like mad. I recently purchased the musicians bundle and have been having great fun.
